While coin collecting is a lot of fun, most collectors will not get rich by finding a unique coin and buying it for their collection. The ancient coins of the Byzantine empire are no exception to that, and while there are some rare enough to command a high price, most of the coins are common and affordable for collectors at nearly any level.

Finding Coins For Your Collection

For most coin collectors, a coin shop is a good starting point when you are looking for coins and want to deal with someone knowledgeable about the coins you are interested in. The coin shop owner can tell you a lot about the coins they have for sale and help you select pieces for your collection.

If you are looking for Byzantine coins, you may want to start with bronze or copper ones and work up to the most expensive gold coins later. These ancient coins span a considerable time frame so there are many different kinds issued by various emperors throughout the Byzantine era.

Talk to the shop owner about the coins you are interested in and the price range you have to work in. There are entry-level coins that can be had for fifteen to twenty dollars each, but the price will go up with coins in better condition and made from better materials like gold or silver.

Buying Coin Lots

Sometimes working with a coin dealer to buy a lot of five or ten coins at once is a good option because you can get a variety of coins at a reasonable price, and all from the same part of the Byzantine era or spread over different parts of it. Because this era extended for so long, there are so many different designs on the coins available that you would have to collect a lot of them to get one from every emperor throughout the era.

Auction Coins

You may want to attend some coin auctions to see if you can find a large lot of coins at a great price, but be careful to inspect the lots before the auction because if you are looking for a specific kind of coin like Byzantine coins, you want to be sure that there are at least a few in the lot.

Getting other collectible coins like ancient Greek coins, for instance, is not a bad thing, but if you have your heart set on Byzantine coins, it would be a shame to buy several lots and then find that you didn't get any of the ones you really wanted.
